A new recipe for travel
Elifant was founded in 2014 when Elizabeth Bartman and Maureen Fant realized that their mutual passion for antiquity, Italy, and food could be the basis of a new type of travel for a discriminating public. Between them they had decades of experience lecturing and leading tours at archaeological sites (Liz) and on ancient and traditional Roman food (Maureen). Joining forces was practically inevitable. Thus archaeo-culinary℠ tourism was born.
The first Elifant Archaeo-Culinary Tour was A Taste of Ancient Rome in April 2015. The Basilicata and Puglia tour in April 2018 was our eighth. We’re proud to say the recipe works: nearly half our participants have returned for a second, third, or fourth Elifant tour.
